The concept that I chose was baseball. My reasoning for picking baseball is because that is my favorite sport. As a kid I grew up watching baseball and always played it. Throughout the baseball season I follow everything that goes on that has to do with baseball. Even when the season is over I’m still following any news about anything to do with baseball very closely.
Baseball started back in the 1850’s and was considered as the “national pastime” or “national game”. In the 1890’s African Americans were barred from the actual baseball league so they started their own league called the “Negro League”. Baseball is now considered as Americas past time. It was a sport that in some of the darkest hours of America, it helped citizens forget about 9/11 for just a couple of hours. Baseball is watched all around the world. Many players now a days are coming from the Dominican republic, Spain, Japan, and Mexico, etc. So that shows that it is a global sport.
A few songwriters that have written songs about baseball are, The Dropkick Murphy’s (“Tessie”), The Hold Steady (“Take Me Out To The Ball Game”), and Bob Dylan (“Catfish”.) Some artists that have done paintings for baseball are, Jennifer Ettinger, Charles Fazzino, Graig Kreindler, Edgar J. Brown, and James Fiorento.

1.“Take Me Out to the Ball Game” by Jack Norworth
Katie Casey was base ball mad.Had the fever and had it bad;Just to root for the home town crew,Ev'ry sou Katie blew.On a Saturday, her young beauCalled to see if she'd like to go,To see a show but Miss Kate said,"No, I'll tell you what you can do."
"Take me out to the ball game,Take me out with the crowd.Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,I don't care if I never get back,Let me root, root, root for the home team,If they don't win it's a shame. For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,At the old ball game."
This relates to my concept because it is about a girl who loves the game of baseball. She tells her friend that she can take her to a ball game.
2.“Centerfield” by John Fogerty
Oh, put me in, coach - I’m ready to play today;Put me in, coach - I’m ready to play today;Look at me, I can be centerfield.
This song relates to my concept because it is about a young player telling him he wants to play and is ready to play.
3.“Talkin’ Baseball” by Terry Cashman
Well, now it's the 80's,And Brett is the greatest,And Bobby Bonds can play for everyone.Rose is at the Vet,And Rusty again is a Met,And the great Alexander is pitchin' again in Washington.
This song relates to my concept because it is talking about some of the great players that have played baseball.
4.“Joltin’ Joe Dimaggio” by Les Brown
Hello Joe, whatta you know?We need a hit so here I go.Ball one (Yea!)Ball two (Yea!)Strike one (Booo!)Strike two (Kill that umpire!)A case of Wheaties
He started baseball's famous streakThat's got us all aglowHe's just a man and not a freak,Joltin' Joe DiMaggio.
This song is talking about one of the most famous players in baseball. They are talking about Joe Dimaggio and how he holds the record for consecutive games with getting a hit at 56 games.
5.“A Dying Cub Fan’s Last Request” by Steve Goodman
By the shore's of old Lake MichiganWhere the "hawk wind" blows so coldAn old Cub fan lay dyingIn his midnight hour that tolledRound his bed, his friends had all gatheredThey knew his time was shortAnd on his head they put this bright blue capFrom his all-time favorite sportHe told them, "Its late and its getting dark in here"And I know its time to goBut before I leave the line-upBoys, there's just one thing I'd like to know
Do they still play the blues in ChicagoWhen baseball season rolls aroundWhen the snow melts away,Do the Cubbies still playIn their ivy-covered burial groundWhen I was a boy they were my pride and joyBut now they only bring fatigueTo the home of the braveThe land of the freeAnd the doormat of the National League
Told his friends "You know the law of averages says:Anything will happen that can"That's what it says"But the last time the Cubs won a National League pennantWas the year we dropped the bomb on Japan"The Cubs made me a criminalSent me down a wayward pathThey stole my youth from me(that's the truth)I'd forsake my teachersTo go sit in the bleachersIn flagrant truancy
and then one thing led to anotherand soon I'd discovered alcohol, gambling, dopefootball, hockey, lacrosse, tennisBut what do you expect,When you raise up a young boy's hopesAnd then just crush 'em like so many paper beer cups.
This song relates to my concept because it is talking about a dying cubs fan. He saw the cubs play when he was younger and loved them all through his life and talked about how they can raise your hopes and then crush them.
6. “Go All The Way” by Eddie Vedder
Don't let anyone say that it's just a gameFor I've seen other teams and it's never the sameWhen you're born in Chicago you're blessed and you're healedThe first time you walk into Wrigley FieldOur heroes wear pinstripesHeroes in blueGive us the chance to feel like heroes tooForever we'll win and if we should loseWe know someday we'll go all the wayYeahSomeday we'll go all the wayWe are one with the CubsWith the Cubs we're in loveYeah, hold our head high as the underdogsWe are not fair-weather but foul-weather fansWe're like brothers in arms in the streets and the standsThere's magic in the ivy and the old scoreboardThe same one I stared at as a kid keeping scoreIn a world full of greed, I could never want moreThan someday we'll go all the wayYeahSomeday we'll go all the waySomeday we'll go all the wayYeahSomeday we'll go all the waySomeday we'll go all the way
This song relates to my concept because it talks about how this cubs fan thinks that the cubs will go to win the world series. Which they haven’t done since 1908 and is the longest world series winless streak in baseball.

On the morning of July 24th, 2004 I was getting ready to go to the ballpark to get ready to face the New York Yankees. We had been struggling of lately, but we knew we could turn it around. The day was rainy enough that they were thinking about calling the game, but no one wanted that. Every single player in our dugout wanted to play that game. So myself and Johnny Damon went into Terry Francona’s office and asked him if they were going to call the game and he said “it looks that way.” So we told him we wanted to play that game. So we ended up playing the game.
We had Bronson Arroyo going for us. As everyone knew there is a bad history between us and the Yankees. However today it got a lot worse.
It was the top of the fifth inning and Alex Rodriguez was up. Bronson Arroyo was still pitching a good game for us, but he lost his command and hit Alex. Now in a normal game when a pitcher hits a batter the batter will take his base, but in a Red Sox and Yankee game every player thinks when they get hit its intentional. So A-Rod being A-Rod he stared down at my pitcher as he started walking to first. So I stood between them both. Then alex started yelling at bronson, but I was protecting my pitcher so I started yelling at him and then he started yelling at me. Then we were in eachothers faces. Then all hell broke loose, and next thing I know me and alex are on the ground fighting with every one else trying to break us up. Then finally the fighting stopped and alex and I got thrown out of the game for fighting. However in that one single game we won twice. We won the fight and we won the game later on.
The game was crucial for us because after that we went on a winning streak that helped us get into the playoffs. The only bad thing coming out of that fight was that myself and alex got suspended for 4 games and fined 2,000$.

It was the morning of October 28, 2007 and I woke up extra early today. It was a really important day to the Boston Red Sox and the whole city of Boston. That’s because it was game 4 of the World Series. I had nerves running throughout my whole body because even though we were up 3 games to none, we didn’t want to give any momentum the Rockies. So I had to pitch my best game that I could.
I had time to kill in the morning. So I went out to breakfast with the team. It was David Ortiz, Mike Lowell, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, Josh Beckett, Jonathan Papelbon, and I. We had a great meal at one of the best breakfast places in Denver. So it was about 2 o’clock Pacific Time and we had to go to the ballpark. We were playing at Coors Field in Denver Colorado against the Colorado Rockies. There was not a lot of pressure on us to win this game, but we wanted to win it because if we didn’t then that would give the rockies momentum to the next game. We didn’t want that to happen because before the playoffs started they had won 22 of their last 25 games.
We were in the club house and Terry Francona wanted to give a little speech. He told us all that we just needed to play hard and not to beat ourselves up if make a mistake because then if we worry about that mistake too much we will just keep making more. He came up to me and said “Jon, I just want you to pitch the best you can. As long as you can do that I know we will win.” I was happy he said that because it let down my nerves a lot.
Before the game started I had to go into the bullpen and start to warm up. So I threw around 30 pitches before I told John Farrell, our pitching coach, that I was warmed up. So I went back into the dugout before the game was officially starting. We were all introduced before the national anthem was going to begin. Then it was all ready to start the game.
The game started off with a bang with Jacoby Ellsbury hitting a double off of starting pitcher Aaron Cook and then Dustin Pedroia advancing him to third. David Ortiz would then hit an rbi single to give us the lead and help me. So now it was my turn to face the Colorado rocky hitters. I had to face the top of the lineup, but with the confidence I had I was able to get through the first without allowing a base runner. I pitched all the way to the 6th inning, but I had just thrown my ninety second pitch and walked the batter. So Terry came out told me I pitched a heck of a game and brought in our hard throwing reliever Manny Delcarmen. He was able to come in and get the out we needed. We already had the 2-0 lead going into the 7th inning, but Mike Lowell didn’t think it was enough and hit a homerun to give us a 3-0 lead. However in the bottom of the 7th with a 3-0 lead outfield for the rockies Brad Hawpe hit a solo homerun off of Manny Delcarmen. We were able to get through the 7th inning without allowing another run. We were able to add another run off of pinch hitter Bobby Kielty’s home run. So going into the bottom of the 8th inning with a 4-1 lead. Everyone was getting the hopes it was going to be an easy finish. We brought in reliever Hideki Okajima to pitch the 8th. He got the first out easy, but then allowed a single and a two run shot from Garret Atkins. So now I was getting nervous again because it was now back to being a 1 run ball game. However we were able to bring in Jonathan Papelbon to finish out the 8th. Then going into the bottom of the 9th inning, everyone was praying Jonathan would have a one two three inning. When two outs were gone and there was 2 strikes on the last hitter everyone was on their feet. When we saw Seth Smith swing through strike three there was a frenzy running out to the middle of the diamond because we had just won the world series for the second time. I was happy to be holding my first world series championships with the hope that there will be many more to come.

It was the morning of October 17th. I was getting ready to go to the ball park and warm up to possibly play the biggest game of my life. We are facing the New York Yankees and have a defecit of down 3 games to none. No other team in major league baseball has come back from down 3 games.
When I got to the club house everyone had a glum and distorted look on there face. Everyone was reminiscing of the 2003 ALCS when Aron Boone walked off in game 7. So everyone was not in the best of moods and wanted to get back at the Yankees for last year, but we all knew there was a big chance we would get swept and have to go home with our heads down.
The only person keeping everyone alive was loud mouth Kevin Millar. He kept everyones spirits high saying we can still do it, we can sill win. While warming up he was telling all the fans of Red Sox Nation we can still do it. “Don’t count us out, all im asking is give us tonight” was his exact qoute.
The game had started and through the first two innings it look like it could be a pitching duel. However in the top of the third Alex Rodriguez struck a devistating blow both to us and the red sox fans with a two run homer to give the yankees the lead. In the bottom of the fifth we should some life too scoring three runs off of starter Orlando Hernandez. The bad thing was that we held the lead for not even an inning when Bernie Williams drove home Hideki Matsui and Toni Clark hit a single to drive in Ruben Sierra for the yankees to take the lead 4-3. Kevin Millar was right though you can’t count out the Red Sox. In the bottom of the ninth facing the most dominate reliever in the game Mariano Rivera, Millar walked then we pitch ran with Dave Roberts. He made the most famous steal in Red Sox history by stealing second and getting into scoring position. Then luckily Bill Muelle hit the game tying single to put the game into extra innings.
The game stayed tied all the way until the 12th inning. My friend and teammate Manny Ramirez started the inning with a screaming single off of Paul Quantrill. So I knew coming up to the plate I could not ground into a double play. I had to try and move the runner into scoring position. So I relaxed myself thinking of nothing, but trying to help my team. I was only 1 for 4 in the game so I wasn’t really helping my team out to this point. When I made the pitcher throw a few pitches to see what he was throwing I found the pitch I wanted. I sent it into the dark knight over the wall for the game winning two run homer to force a game 5. Once I hit the ball everyone in the crowd was dead silence that you could hear a pin drop because no one wanted to jinx the ball by some mysterious way. However when the ball went over the wall every single Red Sox fan at the stadium and at home watching the game roared with excitement to know there is going to be game 5.

The title of this painting is 2007 World Series Champions by the artist Dave Olsen. The subject of this painting is the 2007 Boston Red Sox team that won the world series. The medium of the painting is painting with acrylics and water colors on bristol board. This is a painting of every single player that was on the Red Sox team.
Balance is in this painting because there are paintings of players on the side and then a players in the middle as if the players in the middle are to separate the players on the side. Also color is in this because of some of the different colors he used in thie painting like dark green, light green, white, black, tan and red. Highlight is in this painting because there are some players that are all white as if light is shed on them. Hue is in the painting because there is shading, and light source on some of the players. Juxtaposition is this painting from having some of the players side by side. Realism would be in this painting by having all the players accurate to how they really look. Shade is in here from the players at the top of the painting where they have shadows on their jerseys. Subject matter is in this whole painting because this painting is about all of the players. All the jerseys and faces would be texture because of all the detail put into it. There is a tone because of how he uses all the colors he used. Value is in this painting because of how he goes from dark green all the way down to white and how some players jerseys are light white and dark white.
The story within this piece would be the team itself. It’s showing all the members of the team that was able to get the Boston Red Sox a world series championship. What I found really good about this painting was the value. He went from dark green at the top of the painting and blended all the way to white at the bottom of the painting. Also having some of the jerseys have shading on it and others be just all white.

The title of this painting is Ted Williams which was painted by Dave Olsen. The subject of the painting is one of the greatest baseball player Ted Williams. The medium is painting and its acrylics on Bristol board. The painting is Ted Williams standing there at batting practice holding two bats on his shoulders most likely at Yankees stadium.
Color is included in this painting because there at multiple colors in one area. There is a lot of emphasis on Ted Williams over the background. The field in this painting would be the stadium behind Ted. The focal point of this painting is Ted Williams because there is all the emphasis on him. Highlight is shown in the picture from the background because you can see in the background the grass is lite up from the lights from the stadium. The narrative of the story would be that Ted Williams is getting ready or just finished doing batting practice. The realism of this painting is that Ted Williams does batting practice before every game so he would do this. The subject matter of this painting would be Ted getting ready to get into batting practice or get ready for the game. The texture in this painting is from Ted’s jersey. The tone from the painting is from the use of a lot of colors in it. The value is the difference between how the light is on the bottom of the painting and the dark is the top of the painting.
The story I see within this piece is that Ted is getting ready for the game. He just finished doing batting practice is feeling ready to play the rival Yankees in what’s always a close down the wire, exhausting game. The focal point of this painting would be on Ted Williams because you see him clearly, but the rest of the picture is all blurry. What makes this painting strong is that it focuses just on Ted, and the whole background is blurry. So it puts more emphasis on him. What also makes it good is that there is the light coloring on the bottom of the painting and the dark coloring on the top of the painting.

The title of this painting is Red Sox All Star Dustin Pedroia. It is by the sports painter Dave Olsen. The Medium is painting acrylic on wood. The painting is of the second basemen for the Boston Red Sox Dustin Pedroia.
One term that is used to describe this painting is allegory. That’s because it is a baseball painting. Balance is in the painting because there is a balance of light and dark. Chiaroscuro is also in this painting where there is a difference in light and dark. Content is in this because there is the meaning of baseball. Color is in it because there is different colors in this painting. Emphasis is in the painting with Dustin Pedroia having the emphasis. The figurative is in it because there is a person in it. Interpret is in it because it explains what he is doing. Movement is in it because Dustin Pedroia is moving to hit a baseball. Realism is in it because the artist is accurate with the painting. Shade is also in it because black is mixed with other colors. Texture is in it because of the jersey.
The story behind this painting is the Red Sox second basemen at bat. He just hit the ball and is going to run to 1st base, or he will head back to the dugout from an out.

Declaration
The concept that I chose was baseball. My reasoning for picking baseball is because that is my favorite sport. As a kid I grew up watching baseball and always played it. Throughout the baseball season I follow everything that goes on that has to do with baseball. Even when the season is over im still following any news about anything to do with baseball very closley.
Baseball started back in the 1850’s and was considered as the “national pastime” or “national game”.In the 1890’s African Americans were barred from the actual baseball league so they started their own league called the “Negro League”. Baseball is now considered as Americas past time. It was a sport that in some of the darkest hours of america, it helped citizens forget about 9/11 for just a couple of hours. Baseball is watched all around the world. Many players now a days are coming from the domincan republic, spain, japan, and mexico, etc. So that shows that it is a global sport.
A few songwriters that have written songs about baseball are, The Dropkick Murphys (“Tessie”), The Hold Steady (“Take Me Out To The Ball Game”), and Bob Dylan (“Catfish”.) Some artists that have done paintings for baseball are, Jennifer Ettinger, Charles Fazzino, Graig Kreindler, Edgar J. Brown, and James Fiorento.
